Benefits of Replacing Saturated Fat With Vegetable Oils was Overestimated!

A study done in Minnesota from 1968-1973 was done to see if replacing saturated fats with vegetable oils would reduce serum cholesterol levels and as a result reduce coronary heart disease and death. Study participants were residents of a nursing home and six state hospitals where meals were provided so that fat type and content could be controlled. The experimental cohort was given vegetable oils containing linoleic acid, and the control group was given animal fats, common margarines, and shortenings (saturated fats). The experimental group did have a reduction in serum cholesterol (13.8% versus -1% for controls).
A re-analysis of this data was done recently and published in the British Medical Journal. The authors of the new study found that the original study authors did not publish all study data. These authors found that the original publication overestimated the benefits of replacing saturated fat with vegetable oils. They found that the experimental group did have lower serum cholesterol levels as a result of the vegetable oils, but for each 30mg/dl reduction in serum cholesterol, there was a 22% higher risk of death. There was no evidence of benefit in the linoleic acid group for coronary atherosclerosis or myocardial infarcts (heart attacks). The re-analysis suggested that the original data was not completely published and resulted in the overestimation of the benefits of replacing saturated fat with vegetable oils in regards to risk of death from coronary heart disease.
This study supports newer research showing the higher protein, lower carbohydrate diets are more appropriate than the high-carbohydrate, low-fat diets that have been promoted for the last 30 years. In fact, those recommendations have likely increased the incidence of obesity and diabetes to epidemic proportions.
