ABOUT C. JOHN BAUMGARTNER MD, FACE C. John Baumgartner MD, FACEMedical Director Carl John Baumgartner, M.D., F.A.C.E., is the medical director of the Medical Weight Management Centers and a nationally recognized leader in diabetes, obesity and weight management treatment. Medical Weight Management Centers, a Twin Cities medical clinic that specializes in the treatment of overweight patients, was founded in 1997 and has three clinic locations - Edina, St. Paul and Woodbury, MN. Dr. Baumgartner is the founder of the Endocrinology Clinic of Minneapolis where he worked for more than 30 years. He is now medical director emeritus of the clinic. He also served as a clinical assistant professor of medicine at the University of Minnesota and as medical director of the OPTIFAST Program at Fairview Southdale Hospital, Edina, MN. A fellow of the American College of Endocrinology, Dr. Baumgartner also is an endocrinology consultant at Radiant Research. Dr. Baumgartner speaks nationally about obesity, metabolic syndrome, hypertension and diabetes, and he has published articles and research studies about obesity. Dr. Baumgartner earned a medical degree at Northwestern University and undergraduate degrees from the University of North Dakota and the University of Minnesota. He completed an internship at the Northwestern Medical Center and endocrinology fellowships at the Mayo Clinic and the University of Minnesota. He is a member of several professional associations, including the Twin Cities Diabetes Association, the American Diabetes Association of Minnesota, the American Diabetes Association, the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, the International Diabetes Federation and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, as well as the American Medical Association and the American Society of Internal Medicine. |

Yes, chew your food!An abstract presented at the 2011 European Association for the Study of Diabetes suggests that thorough chewing stimulates the release of two intestinal peptides that reduce appetite and food intake in obese individuals. In a study of obese non-diabetic individuals, thorough chewing stimulated postprandial increases of plasma glucagon-like peptide (GLP)-1 and peptide YY (PYY), both of which are secreted by intestinal L cells. It was reported that the postprandial plasma levels of both hormones were statistically significantly higher after chewing 30 times than after chewing 5. This suggests that thorough chewing of food might have a clinically meaningful effect in controlling body weight in obese individuals. Once again, mom was right.
